Airport security scanning equipment is used to check carry-on items and checked luggage for items that are not approved for air travel. Some of the equipment used during the screening process can emit low-levels of radiation. Keeping public places, such as airports, safe is a big job. Transportation Security Administration TSA screeners at airports check passengers and personal items for dangerous items such as weapons, chemicals and liquids that are not allowed as carry-on items.
They use screening equipment such as metal detectors, millimeter wave machines, backscatter x-ray and cabinet x-ray machines. These devices also detect items that may be hidden. The various types of screening equipment used at airports today each have a different screening purpose. Guidelines are in place for using the equipment in order to keep you safe. Metal detectors use magnetic fields to help identify metal objects.
Magnetic fields are produced by the flow of current through wires or electrical devices. While you are stepping through the metal detector, your carry-on items are going through the X-ray system. A conveyor belt carries each item past an X-ray machine. X-rays are like light in that they are electromagnetic waves, but they are more energetic, so they can penetrate many materials.
The machine used in airports usually is based on a dual-energy X-ray system. This system has a single X-ray source sending out X-rays, typically in the range of to kilovolt peak KVP. KVP refers to the amount of penetration an X-ray makes. The higher the KVP, the further the X-ray penetrates. After the X-rays pass through the item, they are picked up by a detector. This detector then passes the X-rays on to a filter , which blocks out the lower-energy X-rays. The remaining high-energy X-rays hit a second detector.
A computer circuit compares the pick-ups of the two detectors to better represent low-energy objects, such as most organic materials. Since different materials absorb X-rays at different levels, the image on the monitor lets the machine operator see distinct items inside your bag. In fact, the only potential effect on contents would be for photographic film: extremely high-speed, sensitive hotographic film might be somewhat exposed by the x-rays, but regular film and ordinary personal objects are not harmed.
Full Body Screening : Screening of travelers using full-body scanners is getting to be more common in airports, and is performed to reveal objects, including weapons and explosives, that could be concealed under clothing. Two types of full-body scanners are currently in use around the world: backscatter scanners and millimeter wave scanners. Backscatter scanners send out low-energy x-rays towards the person being scanned.
The x-rays bounce off the skin of a person, and items under their clothing, and are detected by the scanner and used to create an image of the surface from which they bounced off.
