Unlike the first game in the spinoff series, this one was released with an episodic format that was spread over several months. It also made its debut on more powerful consoles unlike the first game that debuted on the 3DS , resulting in a more complex and longer game overall. The original Resident Evil had also received a full-fledged remake for the Nintendo Gamecube in The changes made include higher-resolution backgrounds and detailed character models, and the result was an even more cinematic representation of the events in the game.
This version also introduced new enemy types and an expanded Spencer mansion, all of which would come together to almost double the playtime from the original game. Also released on the Gamecube, Resident Evil Zero serves as a prequel to the first game in the series. It shows the events that transpired at the Spencer Mansion before the Alpha team's arrival.
Players control both Rebecca Chambers and Billy Coen, switching between both characters on the fly to solve puzzles and progress through the game. All that partner zapping would result in an adventure that came in at around 11 hours in length. The Dreamcast might have marked Sega's exit from the console race, but one of the shining gems on the system before its eventual demise was Resident Evil CODE: Veronica.
This was the first RE game to completely ditch the pre-rendered backgrounds the previous entries were known for, in favor of real-time rendered environments. It was a technical marvel at the time, and the game would go on to receive a port for the PlayStation 2.
All the boulder-punching jokes aside, Resident Evil 5 is actually a fairly decent action game. It builds upon the elements introduced in RE4, primarily its over-the-shoulder perspective and focus on action, and takes it to the next level by introducing some truly over-the-top set pieces and co-op gameplay.
It remains the highest-selling game in the series, with more than 12 million copies sold, and a complete playthrough should last roughly 12 hours. Resident Evil 4 is without a doubt the most highly-revered entry in the entire series. It not only marks a departure from the survival horror roots the series is known for, but it also proved influential to the wider third-person action-adventure genre.
But Capcom decided to mix things up a little with Zero. The biggest change is the inclusion of two main characters that players can and need to switch between regularly. Both Rebecca and Billy have their own strengths and abilities that are required to complete certain puzzles. There are also no item boxes meaning players have to drop things in a safe place to pick up later. This feature creates a lot of backtracking, so it's no surprise that this prequel is one of the franchise's longest games.
The remake of Resident Evil 3 has received more criticism for being short than any other game in the series. This is the nature of coming out during a time when big releases are expected to last longer than six hours. Capcom does deserve some sympathy as the original RE3 is pretty much the same length.
Although, it may have been advisable to add several extra sections to the remake. Still, the presentation and gameplay of the title are outstanding and the Nemesis is aptly terrifying. It still rivals the RE2 Remake ; players just wanted more. The latter simply has a bit of extra story and some graphical improvements - though it's still in need of a remake. Both games play a lot like the other early Resident Evil titles, but with the inclusion of real-time 3D environments and a more dynamic camera.
Plus, one playthrough in either Code: Veronica is significantly longer than a run in the first three games. CV actually started a trend of the main RE installments taking over ten hours to beat. Deadly Silence is one of the lesser-known remakes in the series. Capcom made multiple changes to the original's gameplay to make use of the system's dual-screen and stylus. These alterations are particularly evident in the Rebirth mode -- a warped version of the original campaign.
Classic mode, on the other hand, is much more reminiscent of the first RE. Both modes are relatively short. While Resident Evil 5 wasn't the first RE game to include elements from the action-adventure genre, it was the first in the main series to be virtually devoid of scares. Unlike the previous games, the item size is irrelevant; a herb or a grenade launcher each occupy one space, and four items may be assigned to the D-pad. The game features puzzles, though fewer than previous titles.
Resident Evil 5 is the first game in the Resident Evil series designed for two-player cooperative gameplay. Resident Evil 4 is considered by many to be one of the best games ever made. So to say that Resident Evil 5 has a lot to live up to is an understatement of epic proportions.
The game received some complaints of racism, though an investigation by the British Board of Film Classification found the complaints were unsubstantiated. The game is the first and only to be first-person and it's a return to survival-horror after a string of entries that were all more action-focused, especially Resident Evil 6. Resident Evil 7 focuses on the Baker family who became infected with a bioweapon after taking in a little girl they found. A game that felt out of time when it released, on the backend of the tank-control era but too late to still be acceptable, the game added a second controllable character and the ability to drop items anywhere but ultimately doesn't leave much impact on the series overall.
Resident Evil Zero was designed for the Nintendo 64 but ultimately came out on the Gamecube, where it felt outdated. It didn't take long for Capcom to start creating offshoot games for other platforms, with the fourth entry in the series releasing on the Sega Dreamcast in addition to others.
Code: Veronica had the usual tank-controls and horror stylings but featured 3D rendered backgrounds with dynamic movement, instead of the series usually prerendered still backgrounds.
While not the landmark achievement that Resident Evil 4 was, the game continued down the third-person action horror path that was started with its predecessor. The game is still slow and plodding like its predecessor, but the game forces teamwork for bigger enemies and revamps the storage system, no longer slowing down the action when a player enters their inventory.
Resident Evil 4 being the best Resident Evil game and the second-longest might send the wrong message that longer means better. Originally released for the Gamecube, this entry revamped the series entire gameplay structure, replacing tank-controls with over the shoulder third-person shooting.
While it wasn't in the camp of run and gun, this dynamic change made for one of the best in the series, as Government Agent Leon Kennedy must try and save the president's daughter. A game where the phrase "everything is good in moderation" is thrown out the window, Resident Evil 6 followed the third-person action too far down the path.
