The Flying Saucer Mystery. New York: Wanderer, High Risk. New York: Aladdin, Getting Closer. New York: Archway, The Demon of River Heights. New York: Papercutz, Win, Place or Die. Recently, while cleaning out the attic, I spotted 56 bright yellow spines, still in good condition, glowing on a dusty shelf. And so, without further ado a-Drew? This one has rampant racism AND an unforgettably ludicrous villain plot.
In addition to stealing all their black characters from Gone with the Wind , this book has astoundingly bad pacing. File this under Most Disappointing. An exciting start gives way to padding and so, so much racism. This book deserves to be forgotten too.
Sloppy sleuthing and sloppy editing combine into one mess of a mystery. There is something to be said for keeping the little in your girl. It was a different time, and appearance mattered A LOT. Just something to keep in mind before you hand it to your tween. The Nancy Drew books are rather dark in places.
One of the strengths of these books is that there are clear distinctions between good and evil, and justice is served. However, some of the content might be too dark for young readers to handle independently. In fact, there were lots of portions of those original books that portrayed minorities in inaccurate and inappropriate ways.
For a rough reference, the original editions published between — contain some racist passages. The majority of editions produced after have removed the offensive material. They look like the cover above this section, with a giant gold sticker saying they are The Original. These books do have a caveat in the beginning of the book that they are authentic, and might be offensive. But what middle schooler reads and comprehends that?? I would avoid these editions.
However, take a quick glance at the publisher and date before you pick up a full set for your child at the used book sale. Every child is different. Nancy is a teenage, amateur detective who lives with her father, Carson Drew , in the small town of River Heights. She is often assisted on her crime investigations by her two best friends, Bess Marvin and George Fayne , and occasionally by the Hardy Boys or her boyfriend Ned Nickerson.
Nancy Drew's mother died when Nancy was only three years old. The Drew's housekeeper, Hannah Gruen , has since become like a mother to Nancy. Nancy has a very good relationship with her father, whose lawyering job tends to call him away on business quite often. Nancy has a dog called Togo.
